Day 2: Brahmacharini
“Brahmacharini ” is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. She is another form of Goddess Durga and represents purity, devotion, and wisdom. Her name “Brahmacharini” means “one who practices Brahma,” or spiritual practices.
Brahmacharini: Shailputri’s Love Story
As Shailputri grows up, she transforms into Brahmacharini, entering the youthful phase of life. During this time, she falls deeply in “love with Lord Shiva.” However, her father, King Daksha, does not approve of their relationship.
The Devotion of Brahmacharini
To be with Lord Shiva, Brahmacharini devoted herself to strict self-discipline and spiritual practices. Her dedication and commitment serve as a powerful example of the importance of discipline and determination when pursuing our goals.
Objections from King Daksha
King Daksha opposed Brahmacharini’s marriage to Lord Shiva for several reasons. He didn’t want his pure and devoted daughter to marry a god outside their family. Daksha saw Lord Shiva as a simple and unknown deity whose lifestyle didn’t align with their values. Additionally, he felt jealous of Shiva’s growing popularity and believed that marrying him would diminish their family’s importance.
Moreover, King Daksha was very religious and thought that Lord Shiva’s life of meditation and self-discipline was not suitable for his daughter.
Symbolism of Brahmacharini
Brahmacharini is often depicted wearing white clothes, symbolising purity. She holds a rosary in one hand and a water pot in the other.
